PITTSBURGH -- Edinson Volquez loves how Josh Harrison plays the game. Andre Smith Cardinals Jersey . He thinks the third baseman is the most valuable player in the National League. Harrison hit an RBI triple and scored on Jose Tabatas tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night. Harrison had three hits while also making a number of sparkling defensive plays. Tabata, starting in right field for the injured Travis Snider, finished with two hits in the Pirates sixth win in eight games. "Hes unbelievable," Volquez said of Harrison, who began the season as the last man on the Pirates bench but is now their leadoff hitter. "He can do everything. For me, hes the MVP with the way hes been playing. Hes an exciting player." Volquez was working on a no-hitter before Devin Mesoracos leadoff single in the seventh. He was charged with one run and three hits in 7 2-3 innings, running his unbeaten streak to seven starts. "It was a very impressive outing," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "It wasnt his best fastball but he kept it down and no-hit them for six innings without the best stuff weve seen from him." Reds right-hander Mike Leake allowed six hits in seven innings in his second consecutive scoreless outing. He pitched 6 2-3 innings in a 1-0 victory over Atlanta last Saturday in his previous start. Cincinnati put two runners on in the eighth, chasing Volquez from the game. Mesoraco then put the Reds in front with an RBI single against Tony Watson (10-1), but Brandon Phillips was thrown out at home to end the inning. The Pirates ERA is 2.15 over their last eight games. Mesoraco had two of the Reds four hits. The Pirates winning rally came against Jonathan Broxton (4-2). Pinch-hitter Andrew Lambo, recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis before the game, singled off first baseman Todd Fraziers glove with one out. Then Harrison and Tabata followed with their big hits. "It was really one pitch that hurt me," Broxton said. "Harrison hit one off the right-field wall but the other two hits were ground balls." TRAINERS ROOM Reds: 1B Joey Votto experienced pain in the area of his troublesome left knee on Wednesday when he attempted to field ground balls for the first time since going on the disabled list July 6 with a distal quadriceps strain, manager Bryan Price said Friday. Votto wont be ready to play when he is eligible to come off the disabled list on Thursday, and the rest of the season is in doubt. Pirates: 1B Pedro Alvarez (sprained left foot) sat out for a second game and Snider (left hamstring discomfort) was not in the lineup after leaving Wednesdays win over St. Louis. Both are day to day. UP NEXT Reds: RHP Alfredo Simon (13-8, 3.26 ERA) will start Saturday in his first outing since breaking a five-game losing streak Sunday by beating Atlanta. Simon is 1-4 with a 4.74 ERA in eight starts in the second half after going 12-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 18 starts in the first half and being selected to his first All-Star game. Pirates: RHP Vance Worley (5-4, 3.14 ERA) will try to bounce back after losing his last three starts and compiling a 6.11 ERA in that span. BOLSTERING THE BENCH The Pirates recalled Lambo to bolster their bench with Alvarez and Snider sidelined. Lambo hit .328 with 11 home runs and 42 RBIs in 61 games at Indianapolis. He also had hit six home runs in his last eight games. RHP Gerrit Cole was optioned to rookie-level Bristol to clear a roster spot for Lambo. However, it is strictly a procedural move and Cole will be recalled Monday when the roster limit expands to 40 and start that day at St. Louis. Chad Williams Jersey .C. -- Eric Staal kept his focus after his apparent breakaway goal was waived off early in the third period. Sam Bradford Jersey . Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Allen Craig on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion on Sunday. http://www.nflcardinalsrookiestore.com/ . Anything less than gold for either nation is considered a disappointment.   Yet for Switzerland, advancing to the semifinal might be a victory in itself.Richmond, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - The 23rd-ranked Northern Iowa Panthers are hoping to match the best start in school history when they pay a visit to the Rams of VCU on Saturday evening. Northern Iowa comes in at 9-0, its best start as a Division I program, and a win tonight would tie the program record for the best opening to a season with the 1963-64 squad that won its first 10 games en route to a 23-4 overall record. The Panthers were most recently in action at Denver on Wednesday night, and they used a record-setting shooting performance to knock off the Pioneers, 65-55. VCU had begun the season as a member of the Top-25, and after opening with three straight wins, the team has lost three of five, with the most recent being a 74-57 setback to a ranked Virginia squad last Saturday. The Rams other defeats came against another Top-25 foe in Villanova (77-53), as well as to regional rival Old Dominion (73-67). This is the first of two straight, and four of the next five VCU will play at home. The series between these two teams is knotted at 1-1, with both meetings taking place over the last two years. VCU won at home in 2012, 77-68, while UNI returned the favor last year with the identical score. Northern Iowa set a Missouri Valley Conference record for shooting percentage in a half in Wednesdays win at Denver, as it knocked down 15-of-17 (.882) field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes en route to a 70 percent shooting effort for the entire game. The Panthers also impressed at the foul line (19-of-23, .826), while logging a 21-13 edge on the glass. Seth Tuttle paced UNI with 12 points, Deon Mitchell and Wes Washpun added 11 eacch, and Paul Jesperson pitched in with 10. Josh Bynes Jersey. Tuttle has been a man possessed for the Panthers here in the early going, as he is netting 64 percent of his total shots in averaging a team-best 15.9 ppg. He also is among the club leaders in rebounds with 6.4 rpg, trailing only Marvin Singleton (6.6 rpg) in that department. Washpun (10.6 ppg, 3.3 apg) is the only other double-digit scorer for a team that is putting up 67.4 ppg while doing a masterful job at the defensive end in yielding only 55.2 ppg. Mitchell is averaging just 6.4 ppg, but he is just three points away from reaching 1,000 for his career. Poor shooting and a lack of effort both on the glass and at the defensive end proved to be the Rams undoing in their recent loss to Virginia. VCU hit only 38.3 percent of its total shots, while the Cavaliers were successful on a gaudy 68.3 percent of theirs. The Rams suffered a 35-21 rebounding deficit, and had only two players score in double figures. Trevon Graham hit for 17 points thanks to a 5-of-9 showing from 3-point range, while Melvin Johnson added 15 points. Briante Weber only finished with five points, but he handed out five assists and was credited with five of the teams 12 steals in the game. Graham continues to pace the Rams in scoring with his 17.4 ppg, but Johnson is right there at 16.9 ppg. The team as a whole is netting 74.8 ppg, but the defensive stance, which has been a mainstay of VCUs stellar effort in recent years, hasnt performed up to par as foes are generating 70.2 ppg in hitting close to half of their field goal attempts (.473), and better than 40 percent of their 3-point tries (.408).
